A Letter from Outgoing SAI President, Kaela Olsen ('22)
Dear Student Agencies Family,
This year has been nothing like what I expected it to be. We had a solid start in the spring before being sent home from Cornell’s campus due to Covid-19’s spread across the country. All our businesses were meeting or exceeding our revenue targets, and the student team was beginning to mesh. However, this all came to an abrupt end once Cornell announced its campus shutdown. I remember how uncertain everything was in March; to me, our response embodied the essence of Student Agencies. Together, we mobilized the resources to set up drop-off counters for Cornell. Though we received only a trickle of boxes, it was inspiring to see the student team come together to see it through and provide what we could to the Cornell community.
While, in April, it seemed unclear whether we would even come back for the summer, we were able to convince the board to let us come back. I am so grateful we did, because this past summer will be one of the best summers of my life. Between operating Hired Hands through Covid-19 and pulling off a pre-arrival 5x our average volume, this has been a summer, and a year, like no other. Not only did we make critical and enduring changes in our business operations, but some of the memories we created will stay with me forever. Student Agencies has provided me the experience of managing a multi-million dollar business through an unforeseeable and unprecedented global crisis. Not many young people can say the same thing. While this was one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced, it’s also one of the most rewarding successes I’ve had. I’ve grown more than I could have ever expected, become resilient in the face of uncertainty, and was genuinely inspired by the entrepreneurship and innovation that we’ve enacted over the past few months. Most importantly, I’ve been given some of the most meaningful relationships, and I know that the friendships I’ve made with the team will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I would also like to give a very special thank you to Kyle, Bonnie, and Lisa. All of you have had such a profound impact on me, both in and out of the office. You’ve pushed me to grow, challenged me to go beyond what I thought was possible, and supported me throughout the ups and downs of this unpredictable and unprecedented year. I will never forget the lessons I learned from you, as well as those learned from the rest of the 2020 team. Thank you to everyone who has impacted and supported me throughout my time with Student Agencies. The memories, friendships, and experiences I’ve fostered will forever shape who I am.
Lastly, I’d like to give my best wishes to the incoming President, Charlie Lee. I’m incredibly confident in the success of Student Agencies under his leadership and cannot wait to see all that the 2021 team will accomplish.
