SAI Alumni Spotlight: Brandon Huang

Though a recent graduate of Cornell, Brandon Huang ('15) already has a considerable amount of experience under his belt.

While in high school, Huang was on his school's varsity tennis and basketball teams, coached a youth basketball team, and tutored in his spare time. Inspired by his own experience playing on his school's basketball team, he started Hoops for Hope in 2010, a club geared towards the promotion of basketball as an outlet outside of academics.

Huang entered Cornell in 2011 with a fierce desire to explore all his opportunities on campus. "If Cornell was Neapolitan ice cream, I wanted all three flavors in my scoop", says Huang.

Seeking a multidisciplinary education, Huang pursued an independent major in Mechanical Engineering and Entrepreneurship through the College of Engineering. He joined Y.O.U.R.S. (Youth Outreach Undergraduates Reshaping Success), an organization aimed at mentoring lower-income children in the Ithaca area, and Design for America, a club geared towards design to solve social issues.

In 2013, Huang joined Student Agencies, Inc. as Director of Operations for Big Red Shipping and Storage. After a successful term, he was promoted to General Manager of Big Red for the 2014 year.

An avid fan of applied learning, Huang focused on aggressively scaling up its marketing efforts by applying what he had learned in classes at Cornell like Social Psychology and Consumer Behavior during his tenure. These efforts weren't all for naught—under his management, Big Red Shipping and Storage experienced record breaking revenue growth.

Huang credits his experience at Big Red Shipping and Storage as being especially significant to his professional development. Huang cites SAI CEO Kyle Karnes ('91) as being "there every step of the way". During one particularly challenging peak season, he recalls that Karnes came back to the office after he called Karnes that evening for advice and worked with him for hours to design a more efficient operating system.

Following his tenure at Big Red Shipping and Storage, Huang joined Deloitte as a Strategy and Operations analyst where he still currently works. Looking forward a couple years, Huang isn't sure where he'll be career-wise, but one thing he is sure of—he wants to continue learning.
